Can you help me with this. Both dogs are real good dogs and pretty calm (Okay our poodle bounces off the walls when he is feeling good but our mix is quiet and calm)
Okay ever since our poodle started getting sick again. We noticed our Jack Russell mix has been a little more dominant toward him but it got worse over the days he was real ill.
Well her prey drive is starting to kick in toward him (something that has never been an issue)
You can see in her actions that she is fighting it back.....you can see she doesn't want to hurt him but she is fighting instinct.
And I'm kind of worried for my poodle who is ill. Now that he is getting better she has backed off and is getting back to normal but it got rough.
I mean she even knew she wasn't supposed to do that and she coward when she saw that we saw her.
She seems to have been fighting the prey drive which is good and you can't fault her for instinct.
But my poodle is going to have these flareups off and on his whole life and they are both only a little over a year old. (they have been raised together)
Is there anything we can do to lessen her drive or make things easier for her when our poodle is sick so she isn't as tempted to let instinct take over?
I want to keep them both safe.....they love each other so much.
Here is a picture of how they usually are together:

Darlin, that isn't prey drive.
Prey drive is what makes terrier breeds predisposed to chasing and killing small animals....like squirrels and rabbits and such. This sounds more like sheer dominance. The poodle is feeling weak...the JRT is taking advantage.
Train. Discipline. Seperate if necessary.Dogs prey drive kicking in......a really bad thing need advice.?
It isn't prey drive, it is pack behavior. In a pack a sick or injured member is a limitation to the whole pack and they will drive it off or kill it to keep the pack strong and healthy.
You will probably need to seperate them whenever the poodle is ill.
sasha either knows he has been sick and trying to either motivate him to get better or she is doing it for attention as she knows you were worried about zack
It's called discipline. When the poodle is under the weather, make sure your other dog knows she is off limits. I don't know what type of illness the poodle suffers from, but perhaps place her bed in a quiet room where she can rest, recover and be left alone by the other dog. Let the other dog know the room is off limits and give him a sharp correction if he shows any animosity to the ill dog. Don't worry about his feelings or making life easier for him. He has to learn where the boundaries are and he must respect them.
